Ashland Home Renovation
Small, Smart, Sophisticated
The Ashland renovation involved updating the kitchen, dining, living room, and mudroom of an 1886 home, but the biggest win was definitely the kitchen. We were able to completely transform this space while preserving the architectural integrity of the walls, windows, and doorways and the original 135-square-foot floor plan.
Though the electrical and plumbing had already been brought up to code, the kitchen consisted of poorly installed cabinetry and oversized, misplaced appliances, with no thought to efficiency or practicality. Working with a modest budget, the new floor plan involved opening up the original doorway that had been walled-off. By relocating the entry and adding a pass-through, light now fills the once-cold, dark kitchen. We moved appliances, installed cabinets designed to utilize every square inch of space, and added a peninsula, creating a kitchen more conducive to storage and function. Warm gray-brown tones were chosen to complement the red oak cabinetry. Countertops were selected for easy upkeep and cost. And the finishes and lighting add to the modern look. Truly unique to this kitchen, the custom bulkhead above the peninsula is an artistic approach to problem solving.
